10 Phenomenal Games With AWFUL Stories

1. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a game of two halves. On one side, you have some of the deepest and most creative stealth mechanics ever made, a mind-blowing exploration of player freedom, tight gameplay, and stellar design. Then, you've got the story, which is bad, very bad, one can even say it's completely unfinished because, well, it is.

This game was supposed to answer questions about MGS lore, build narrative bridges, and delve into the character of Big Boss, but it created more questions than it answered. The narrative barely made sense and had an awful habit of abandoning plot threads or concluding them in anti-climactic ways. On top of that, the characters were woefully underdeveloped, the use of mother base was tiresome, and the core promise of the game (showing how Big Boss became the villain of MGS1) just didn't happen.

It's no secret that the relationship between Hideo Kojima and Konami was tenuous at best during this game's production, which goes a long way to explaining why so much was wrong with this game's narrative. But, as it stands, you can barely even call the narrative of MGSV a story, as there's precious little there.
