For some reason or another, there's still this prevailing idea among the ill-informed that Africa is nothing but wilderness and poverty. You'll often hear some idiot say something along the lines of, "Africa has never had a great civilization." In that instance, you have two choices.

Choice one: hit that person for their foolishness. It'll make you feel good.

Choice two: point them toward the Empire of Mali (and THEN hit them).

The Mali Empire was one of the most prosperous on the entire continent. In fact, one of its rulers, Mansa Musa, is widely considered by scholars to be the richest person in history.

Mansa Musa was so rich!

"How rich was he?!"

He was so rich that the value of gold around the world literally decreased because he spent so much of it. Worth some $400 billion, he built countless universities and mosques over the course of his reign.

When would it take place? Perhaps during the height of Musa's rule, sometime between 1317 and 1337. Alternatively, it could pick up shortly afterwards, when the empire started to fracture. It could even take place a little later, when both the Portuguese and the Songhay Empire worked to destabilize Mali.
