10 Popular Video Game Series' That Completely Forgot Who They Were

1. Resident Evil

Remember the first time you saw a zombie in-game? Of course you do. Equally impressive (if not more so) was Resident Evil 2; a game that took the blueprints laid out by the first game and mastered them, creating what many consider to be the best survival horror game we've seen to date. Resident Evil 3 followed a similar path (though with much less success) but overall, the first three games are still revered as classics. Resident Evil 4 marked the first major shake-up for the series but it was wholly positive; many consider Resident Evil 4 to be one of the best games ever made. The shift from third-person fixed camera to an over-the-shoulder, Ganados-up-in-your-face view made everything far more exciting and dramatic. Many have criticised the game for removing the horror elements (read: zombies) but really, there's nothing more terrifying than seeing a crazed villager mere moments away from burying a pitchfork in your face, up close and personal. Resident Evil 5 took even bigger steps towards the action genre with a co-op partner introduced for the first time. It's a decision that was inevitable really, considering the way games moved towards co-op based stories anyway, but many were pretty irritated as it overshadowing the game somewhat. It wasn't spectacular by any means, but it was still a fairly solid action game. Then came Resident Evil 6 and boy, things took a turn for the worse. Actually, they didn't just take a turn; they veered off a cliff and rolled away in a blaze. Resident Evil 6 re-introduced the zombies but took away almost everything else the series was known for; namely, atmosphere and story. The story barrels from one set-piece to another and the game turned into what was essentially a Gears Of War rip-off; not a good one either. Many have re-attributed the cause of Resident Evil's decline to the action-genre leanings of the fourth installment but in truth, even if you somehow hated Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 6 is a bad game on all fronts. I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
