Current Status: After one hell of a marketing campaign that looked to be giving us a window into what life is like under Imperial rule, Battlefront 2 not only discarded this plot thread after a couple of missions, but absolutely thermo-nuclear detonated any remaining goodwill by being loaded with pay-to-win game mechanics.

This was the news story of 2017, with a major public backlash forcing EA to remove the ability to purchase additional Star Cards in-game, though it did little to salvage their reputation or that of the game.

The Future: Star Wars isn't going anywhere any time soon, but if industry rumours are to be believed, Disney are well and truly fed up with EA's exclusive handling of the Star Wars license. Since 2013 they've been the only game studio to handle Star Wars games, and as the story goes, Disney could be eyeing up Ubisoft and Activision as two successors.

Depending on how those deals shake out, the Battlefront name could be left redundant - owned by a studio who can't attach the preceding words that make it sellable. Regardless, Battlefront 1 and 2 weren't anything close to the Star Wars experiences fans wanted, and if this is where we're at right now... it's going to look far worse in next decade.
