10 Pro Evolution Soccer Legends Who Flopped In Real Life

7. Obafemi Martins

While the Nerazzurri were a distinct second best to Juventus and AC Milan in Serie A in the early 2000s, it was a different story in the digital world of PES.

Inter had one of the best squads on the game, especially in attack where the likes of Alvaro Recoba and Adriano (more on him later) were bolstered further by stars like Obafemi Martins.

The Nigerian was pure pace and speed. It was just a case of getting him on the ball and hammering the sprint button. It didn’t always work, of course, but when it did, it was glorious.

Martins’ burst of pace, coupled with his somersault goal celebration (which featured on the game) made him one to watch and, for a while, the Nigerian more than justified the hype.

In an inconsistent Inter team, he was a shining light. Then he went to Newcastle United.

Martins impressed in his first season on Tyneside, but the ill-fated arrival of Sam Allardyce eventually saw Martins relegated to the bench.

Though things improved under Kevin Keegan, a long-term injury saw Martins miss most of the season with the Toon relegated in his absence.

A nomadic few years followed with Martins spending spells in Germany, Russia, England and Spain without ever impressing. While the Nigerian retained his trademark speed, he lacked the finesse of a top player.

Despite starting his career with goals in the Champions League, Martins saw out the peak years of his career over in the MLS.
