If you’re great at your job, then... prove it!

Though it’s most definitely possible to get a job in the gaming industry without a great portfolio, the chances are, it’s the first thing a recruiter will see when considering you for a job.

Obviously, video games roles are so diverse and specialised that it’s impossible to give a one-size-fits-all piece of advice for portfolios, but what I most definitely can do, is offer the advice a recruiter gave me:

A recruiter will ‘read’ your portfolio in less than a minute or two before putting you in the “maybe” pile.

I know what you’re thinking - “how dare they sum up my hundreds of hours of work in a few minutes?” - but trust me, it’s nothing personal. These individuals have to comb through countless potential candidates a day, and they’ve developed an eye for detecting someone that’s just going to fit).

What that means is, select the best and most important pieces first, display them front and centre, and don’t clutter up your valuable space that might distract the eye.

Remember, if the recruiter wants to see more, they can (think of your portfolio as a tray of delicious canapés, not several tureens full of mashed potatoes).

One or two excellent pieces are definitely better than ten or twenty inconsistent ones, so bear that in mind when you’re on the podium, strutting your stuff.
