This one sounds like I’m suggesting you just magically be lucky enough to know someone high-up in the industry and have them indulge in a bit of nepotism. I mean, certainly, go ahead, if you’re in that position, you cheating scumbag, but not everyone has that kind of luck of the draw.

But think about which role you’re interested in, and if it’s one that’s highly contested (such as concept artist or character artist), look to related roles which don’t get nearly as many applicants.

The industry doesn’t see nearly enough tech artists or UI specialists, for example.

It’s not advisable to choose a completely different field entirely (jumping in as a level designer if you want to be a character animator doesn’t have quite as many transferable skills), but if you see some skill overlap, think about your career progression as a whole.

It might be worthwhile to be hired first, then transfer to related roles at a later date, once you’ve proven yourself.
