Wipeout has been a PlayStation exclusive franchise for most of its history. Initially developed by Psygnosis, the futuristic racer became iconic for its techno soundtrack and early entries saw releases across MS-Dos and Sega Saturn too, before the studio’s acquisition by Sony in 2000 (later rebranded as SCE Studio Liverpool).

One early entry was Wipeout 64, the only Wipeout game to ever appear on a Nintendo console, published by Midway. Based off Wipeout 2097, Psygnosis decided to tweak their previous game’s design and expand upon it, adding in new tracks, teams and features.

Released in 1998 a month after Nintendo dropped their own futuristic racer, F-Zero X, it came with a more refined presentation and was widely praised for superior track design but suffered from performance issues and a slow frame rate.

F-Zero remains the better choice for N64 fans due to better performance but it's still a fun game, though the Wipeout franchise has certainly moved onto better things since. Unless you're a dedicated fan of the series or you own the Omega Collection on PS4, this isn't an entry that needs revisiting.
