10 Reasons Why We Love DOOM
5. Keeping Horror At The Forefront
Pulped red pixels don't seem that harsh by today's standards, despite the fact that back in the 90s, the PC Doom games had 18 certificates. Now those retro graphics have a nice pastiche to them, and are hardly extreme in any real sense.
The iconic reinventions however, have carried over the blood and violence in intense fashion, reminding us that Doom is and always will be borne of bone, meat and gallons of the red stuff. Particularly in its latest garb, the brutal dismemberment of demons, and yourself if you're not careful, has been taken to a whole new artistic level.
This could not have been easy given the amount of adult content in today's gaming world, but the simplistic prospect of stepping into Hell and battling its ravenous hoards have always allowed for a suitably graphic and terrifying setting. Every incarnation has just about managed to supersede its predecessor in this way, by taking inspiration from the horror nuances of its video game peers and ramping it up just that one step further. For this reason, Doom is the unsettling blood spattered roller-coaster destined to never get old, or tame.
