5. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - Ashina Castle

Any area of Ashina Castle could have applied here, but the approach to the castle is a real test of patience and skill.

The first major challenge is to take on the sub boss at the top of the stairs leading to the castle. He is no pushover, and he can deal punishing damage in a few strokes of his blade.

The action then spans across the rooftops leading into the castle itself. The rooftops are infested with Nightjars, enemies capable of attacking from literally every direction, quickly overwhelming the player.

Some Nightjars swoops in from the sky, emitting a loud shriek that would make a banshee blush. On virtually every first playthrough this is completely unexpected, and absolutely terrifying.

Towards the end of the level, it delivers its biggest surprise, as a suicidal Nightjar swoops down on the player from a great height before blowing itself up. Not cool.

After finishing this level, you may want to take a breather and have a cup of tea, before continuing the self punishment and torment that is this wonderful, if unforgiving game.
