10 Recent Video Game Villain Deaths That Made Us Cry

1. Elidibus - Final Fantasy 14

Emet-Selch may be the better overall villain, but in terms of a video game villain death in recent years that utterly destroyed players, this author can't think of a better example than the death of the Ascians resident long game schemer, Elidibus.

Elidibus, like the rest of the Ascians, only wanted to bring back his people and civilization, which were wiped out in a random, devastating cataclysm. Unfortunately, bringing their people back - they're convinced - requires more or less collapsing the entire multiverse in on itself. A goal which Elidibus had been working towards for untold millennia. Until you kill all of his friends.

Once that happens, Elidibus - understandably - puts all of his plans on hold until you are dead. Even though you have to stop him, you can't help but feel deeply sorry for Elidibus. All he wants are his friends and family back, leaving you to wonder if you'd really be any different from him were you in his shoes.

And sure enough, you do kill him, leading to him giving one of the saddest final sentences I have ever heard, delivered with heartbreaking beauty by Matt Stokoe. I won't spoil it, but have some tissues on hand when you get to this part.

Shadowbringers is one of the greatest stories in gaming, and the death of Elidibus is one of the saddest villain deaths, not just in recent memory, but in the history of gaming as a whole.
