Undertale's final boss, Asrield Dreemur, might just take the cake for the most tragic villains in gaming history.

Used and sacrificed by his own sibling, Asriel was cursed to a wretched existence as a sentient flower. And, since apparently flowers are naturally sociopathic, violent creatures in the world of Undertale, "flowey", as he started calling himself upon his transformation, set about messing with all the monsters of the Underground across multiple timelines.

This sociopathic behavior really comes down to an all too relatable need to keep everything going and avoid endings at all costs. Which is why, when you show up and start advancing the plot towards, le gasp, an actual ENDING, Asriel confronts you at the end of the true pacifist run and traps you in a never-ending final boss fight.

But with your determination, you manage to push through, and soon you have the depowered God of Hyperdeath at your mercy.

And then you give him a hug. Because this kid really just needs a freaking hug, okay?

As penance for what he'd done, Asriel gives himself up to finally bring down the barrier keeping the monsters in the underground.
