10 Saddest Soulsborne Bosses

7. Gehrman, The First Hunter

Beating up a wheelchair bound old man just isn't right to begin with. Even if he does have a scythe that's three times bigger than your hopes of beating the game.

The saddest part about the Gehrman fight is that there's really no malice to it. Your goal is to save the first hunter from the horrible, endless dream, and his goal is to do the same for you. He's just trying to stop you from trapping yourself in the depressing fate that he's had to put up with for centuries.

If that's not enough, the atmosphere and music for this fight is nothing short of oppressively melancholy. Instead of the epic horror choir that's present for most of the other fights, Gehrman's theme is a quiet, somber violin, played against the backdrop of a peaceful cemetery that's littered with the gravestones of the old hunter's past students.

In fact, this is one of the only fights in the Soulsborne series where the winner is actually the loser, and it really says something about Gehrman's character that the happiest ending is the one where you choose to be executed by him.

Clearly spending an eternity with a creepy, talking sex doll wasn't all it cracked up to be.
