2. Demon's Souls - Upper Latria
Throughout all of the diverse areas you’ll be traveling to during your time in Demon’s Souls, none come close to the terror that you’ll experience in Latria.
As in the case of the other sinister Souls locations featured on this list, Latria is another once great city that has fallen to ruin and despair. Now a grand Gothic landscape of sconce-lit pathways and winding staircases patrolled by gargoyles, Upper Latria is the perfect setting for a horror movie.
At the centre of this twisted place is a living heart that you must destroy by removing its chains to reach the rest of the level. If its body horror design doesn’t immediately unsettle you, then its fleshy beating will certainly do the trick.
Even when this giant organ is taken out of the picture the horror doesn’t stop. After unblocking the path, players will have the privilege of watching a cutscene of grotesque centipede monsters crawling out of the new space – all of which is rendered more disgusting thanks to the improved visuals of the PlayStation 5 remake.
Like something taken straight from H.P Lovecraft’s own nightmares, there’s no questioning how horrifying Latria is.
