Resident Evil was the game that really set the survival horror train into motion. Replete with iconic moments that shook players to the core, Capcom's classic offered an unforgettable experience, inspiring countless other games to follow and cementing its status as one of the greatest horror titles of all time.

While Resident Evil 2 and 3 featured better graphics and more monsters, the first title was the scariest of all, building up a sense of dread from the first moment you step foot inside the game's iconic mansion setting. Latter games focused on action, but the original Resident Evil used every trick in the book to terrify players into submission, from jump scares like the famous zombie dogs scene to subtler sequences like the "itchy, tasty" text, written by a scientific researcher who was turning into a zombie and documenting the experience.

The game's iconic zombies moved slowly and could be killed with a few shots, but were designed in such a terrifying way, with that infamous first zombie encounter living long in the memory of everyone who played it.
