10 Scummiest Moves Made By Video Game Publishers
9. Battlefront 2 With Loot Boxes
Star Wars games after Disney bought it. On the one hand, they had the money, talent, and influence in the industry that they could really bring the galaxy to life. Yet on the other hand EA are seemingly never out of hot water. This brings us to Battlefront 2.
Loot boxes got this game in the spotlight and not for good reasons. Blocking high-level skills and characters behind this luck-based paywall. Something that gave you an advantage over other players in the early days of the game's life cycle. Large buffs to damage health and things that really should exist in a competitive online shooter.
This kind of system being placed in a game where younger children could access it was very unethical and even could the attention of the courts. EA calling it “Surprise mechanics” and “just like a Kinder Egg” somehow managed to not get it classed as gambling in the US. Yet other countries since have not seen it the same way.
Luckily this was fixed and now Battlefront is a much better game because of it.
Shame it took a few years to get there.
