10 Shocking Video Game Twists You Never Saw Coming
10. Metroid - Samus Aran Is A Woman
The list starts off with arguably the first recorded twist in video game history. Metroid was released on the NES in 1987, before the current generation of gamers were born. Much to everyone's surprise, Samus was revealed to be a woman during the ending sequence of the game. Like most players, I had naturally assumed that the person beneath the suit of power armor was some beefy dude, or maybe a robot. I was not expecting some scantily-clad lady to wave goodbye to me as the game wound down.
I could start rambling about gender roles and feminist critiques, but that's boring for everyone, so I'll conclude with this: Metroid's innovative and revolutionary character reveal both defied expectations and paved the way for video game heroines everywhere, and kicks off this list of shocking video game twists.
