4. Trespasser Pioneered The Modern FPS

DreamWorks' 1998 Jurassic Park-themed FPS Trespasser is the textbook definition of an ambitious failure - a game that tried to do a whole hell of a lot, but buried its more impressive innovations under frustrating, boring, bug-filled gameplay.

Trespasser was a rushed-to-market production that nevertheless deserves its due for breaking so much ground, by featuring large, open outdoor environments, smart dinosaur AI, continually rendering the world and objects as players move around the map, and being the first game in history to feature full ragdoll physics.

Despite being clunky-as-hell and running poorly on all but the most high-spec PCs of the time, Trespasser's landmark technicals made it popular among developers, with Valve's Gabe Newell even citing it as influencing Half-Life 2's own physics-based gameplay.

Furthermore, the minds behind Halo: Combat Evolved and Far Cry have also nodded to its impact.

Trespasser may not be particularly fun to play, but its role in the genesis of the modern FPS should be unmistakable.
