10 Terrifying Video Game Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For

9. Condemned: Criminal Origins - The Hate

In the annals of horror game history, Condemned often gets overlooked. Not ignored, but certainly shunned after the poor excuse of a second game.

That aside, the first game had its fair share of scare-inducing moments. A launch title for the Xbox 360, console gamers hadn't really had much in the way of creepy, first person horror.

The visceral combat and crime scene investigations were already enough to put us on edge, but it's the final boss encounter that gets the mention here.

After finally hunting the man behind the murders, you discover the force behind the man behind the murders, the Hate. This is the driving force behind the madness in the city, one that our boy Ethan has to put a stop to.

Yet what makes this tense is that it defies the "tooled up" approach of most final boss fights. Instead it becomes a violent game of cat and mouse around a dilapidated house, with you never sure which one you are.

It defied the norm, which was great... and terrifying.
