8. The Real Life Wolfenstein
You can actually visit a real-life Wolfenstein. Unfortunately, the real version isn't a spectacular castle inhabited by evil soldiers and dark secrets, although on second thought that's probably for the best.
The authentic Wolfenstein actually lies in Bavaria, and rather anti-climactically, is simply an old natural rock formation. The backstory does however, lend itself to some intrigue. Located between Tirschenreuth and Hohenwald, the site formally represented a Germanic ritual sacrifice.
The name, 'Wolfenstein' originates from the resemblance between the shape of the formation and a pack of wolves, although with years of erosion, the granite blocks seem to resemble more a collection of bags than a fierce animal pack nowadays...
So if ever you're travelling through Germany and fancy a tenuously linked gaming-related tourist attraction, Bavaria's very own Wolfenstein is the place to go. You learn something new everyday...
