10 Things You Learn Replaying God of War (2018)

2. The Sheer Number of Call-Backs In Ragnarok

Given the four year gap between God of War and its sequel, it's unlikely many players caught every call-back Raganarok makes its progenitor. But after playing both games back-to-back, it becomes apparent just how many cute references the sequel makes to the reboot.

To list a few examples: Atreus earnestly asking "Can I turn into an animal" in God of War foreshadows the fact that in Ragnarok, he does just that; Kratos telling Freya "No need to explain. Not to me. Not for that" is  word-for-word repeat of a line from the original game (something that escaped this writer's notice entirely the first time round); and both games end with Kratos walking down a mountain staircase, albeit with very different companions.

However, Atreus' maturation in Ragnarok means Kratos sadly never gets the chance to call back to one of his best lines from the reboot, "You will honour your mother and abandon this path you have chosen" (an excellent line to use when your son forgets to scrape the food off his plate before putting it in the dishwasher for three straight mealtimes).
