10 Thoroughly Mistreated Video Game Franchises

4. Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry is an stylish character action game that was built off a prototype for Resident Evil 4. The series quickly found its own identity, and fans loved the exploits of Dante and his family as the tight combat, ridiculous weapons, and fantastic enemies to combo Devil May Cry a top Capcom franchise.

However, Capcom wanted to do Call of Duty sized sales numbers, and figured the best way to do that was to reboot some of their franchises to appeal to western audiences. And Devil May Cry was one of them.

Chaning Dante's iconic look, making his brother Vergil like he'd call you "m'lady," having the story try way too hard to be cool and edgy, and actively mocking things that previous fans of the series liked, the reboot was not looked at favorably. And that's before going into the frustrating gameplay that had it so only specific weapons worked on specific enemies, ruining the flow of combat and making it unsatisfying to play.

Years later, Capcom admitted they made a mistake and made Devil May Cry 5, going off the original series continuity and giving a fitting end to the Sons of Sparda. Hopefully they keep it up.
