Since helping to pioneer the shooter genre, Wolfenstein has been an iconic part of the gaming landscape for decades. As fantastic as some of the series' earlier titles were, it was MachineGames who elevated the franchise to blistering new heights with 2014's Wolfenstein: The New Order alongside its sequel, The New Colossus.

Blending taut stealth gameplay with challenging run-and-gun action, these games were a blast to play. Even better was their collection of eccentric characters that injected a tonne of personality into the steampunk setting. Most notably was the handling of protagonist BJ Blazkowicz, whose newfound humanity gave the titles surprising layers of depth.

Spin-off game Wolfenstein: Youngblood unfortunately failed to reach the same heights. With Blazkowicz mostly absent, the spotlight was on his twin daughters Jess and Soph. While the new protagonists weren't unlikable, they lacked their father's charm.

Although the co-op mechanic made for an enjoyable twist, the plot and characters were far less interesting this time around. Everything felt like a by-the-numbers shooter, devoid of the spark that made the previous entries so remarkable.

With MachinesGames' work complete on Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, it's possible that Blazkowicz could return in Wolfenstein III in the near future.
