When it comes to hack and slash games, none are as iconic as the Devil May Cry series. Filled with fast-paced action that's as challenging as it is satisfying and featuring a collection of memorable characters, it's easy to understand why this acclaimed franchise has accumulated a dedicated following.

One entry that's not seen as favourably by fans, however, is DmC: Devil May Cry.

Developed by Ninja Theory, this reboot was intended to be a fresh spin on the series. While its more grounded plotline, over-the-top style, and streamlined combat system were huge improvements, one aspect that wasn't received as well was the changes to the characters.

The most substantial makeover was given to protagonist Dante. Now more serious and no longer sporting his signature white hair, this edgier version was a substantial tonal shift from the hero fans adored, with many voicing their outrage upon the game's initial reveal.

While DmC was received well by critics and enjoyed modest commercial success, the fan backlash was significant enough for Capcom to return the series to its roots with Devil May Cry 5.

Although the fanbase has since warmed up to DmC, it's unlikely that fans will ever see emo Dante again.
