10 Times Crowdfunded Video Games Slapped You In The Face
4. Unsung Story: Tale Of The Guardians
A passion project from Yasumi Matsuno, director of respected JRPG's Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. Unsung Story has been pitched as a 'spiritual successor' to those titles, with a similar fantasy setting and tactical JRPG gameplay both prominent.
A Kickstarter investment of $660,126 was reached, with Matsuno teaming with Playdek to create this hyped project. Three tumultuous years followed with behind-the-scenes drama, a missed release date of mid-2015, and the controversial decision to rework the title into a PvP game (concept backers had not been advertised). Then in late 2017, Playdek completely exited.
Low-key developer Little Orbit came in to take on the development, but they essentially scraped all former work and haven't received a penny of the crowdfunding. On a positive note, they have been giving frequent updates and have brought back the title to its original concept.
Unlike other entries, this one has the potential to turn its tides and actually release (currently proposed for 2020). If it will turn into a decent game, or be what was originally intended, is another story.
There's no denying it has been a messy emotional rollercoaster for the past five years for all backers involved. Fingers crossed it works out.
