10 Times Crowdfunded Video Games Slapped You In The Face
2. Godus
In similar fashion to Tim Schafer and Brian Fargo's separate successful Kickstarter campaigns, Godus proposed to resurrect a long-dead PC genre the campaigner was intricately linked to.
In this case, it was the God-Simulation game by the inventor of the genre itself, Peter Molyneux.
Now while Molyneux is highly-regarded, he also has a reputation for overhyping titles and not delivering on the majority of his promises. That can be mildly annoying when buying one of his games, but investing your own hard-earned cash into it, will bring the frustration to a whole other level. Regardless, PC gamers basking in nostalgia happily handed over their cash for this Kickstarter in 2013.
During development, a free-to-play mobile version eventually took precedence over the PC version and was released in a watered-down, micro-transaction riddled product. The PC version, on the other hand, still remains in Early Access six years later, with several promised features being cut and basically being a glorified port of the mobile version.
It remains yet another over-hyped misfire to Molyneux's name in the last few years, but at least it led to him finally being called out on it.
