10 Times Gameplay Directly Informed The Narrative
4. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
I'll admit this before going any further: I've not finished this game. I've had three psychotic episodes in my life and this just got a little too real for me.
That being said, I've yet to find any other piece of media that has really captured what it is to suffer from auditory hallucinations - spoiler alert: they're a little bit scary. To this day I don't understand why no developer decided to attempt something similar before Ninja Theory did with Hellblade.
If you have a genuine interest in finding out and understanding what it's like for someone to suffer from psychosis beyond the realm of dry psychological tomes on the topic and want to see what the actual physical experience is like then - beyond perhaps 'Clean, Shaven', an awfully good movie by the by - you're going to struggle to find anything better than Hellblade. Also... it is a rather good game too, or what I played of it. Ninja Theory really smashed it on every front.
