10 Times Horror Video Games Got Truly Twisted
7. Outlast 2 - Infant Corpses
Outlast quickly garnered a reputation for its nerve-shattering chase sequences and its taboo-breaking content when it first released in 2013. When the sequel dropped in 2017, fans could only wonder how the developers could up the ante from the horrors of Mount Massive Asylum.
After a helicopter crash strands protagonist Blake Langerman in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, he awakes to find his wife missing. Armed with only a camcorder, Blake must search for his spouse while avoiding falling victim to the deranged religious cult who occupy these lands.
Gory religious rites, mutilation, suicide, and sexual abuse are all part of the deviant experience that awaits players here. However, one of the most deprived moments occurs early in the game, shortly after first setting foot in the cult’s territory.
Frantically knocking on doors in search of aid as onlookers watch from the shadows, Blake's ordeal leads him to a rundown looking church with an ominous Latin text scrawled above the entrance.
Descending into the darkness, players discover the corpses of babies covering the floor, illuminated by a crucifix-shaped window. The image itself is horrific, but the game goes further by making players walk across them, the bodies making a distinctive crunching sound underfoot.
