10 Times Main Characters Killed Each Other

Though Mafia II is a mostly standalone sequel, it offers up quite the unexpected surprise during a late-game story chapter, where protagonist Vito Scaletta and his best bud Joe Barbaro are sent to assassinate a rat.

This rat just so happens to be Tommy Angelo - the protagonist of the first Mafia game, who ended up testifying against the Salieri family in exchange for a reduced prison sentence and witness protection for his family.

Though players don't get to pull the trigger on Tommy themselves, they do get to watch a grisly cutscene where he's blown away. 

It's an especially fun twist considering that we previously saw Tommy's death play out at the end of the original Mafia, though of course we had no idea who these two random hitmen were.

This was a neat way to tie a meaningful thread between the two games without overdoing it, and it won't be the only time that the Mafia franchise shows up on this list.
