10 Times Video Games "Did Right By The Fans" (And Pissed Everyone Off)
4. Expanding The Scope - Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy fans were ecstatic when Square Enix announced a remake of the series' consensus favourite game, Final Fantasy VII, and even more so once the publisher revealed that it would be a three-game expansion of the original masterpiece.
On paper this sounded great, right? Except for as generally well-crafted as the first installment of the remake project was, it suffered from blatant AAA bloat in an attempt to justify a full-fat retail asking price.
It's painfully obvious that there's about 20 hours of great content packed within the 30-hour main campaign, resulting in around 10 hours of exhausting, tedious padding
This is most egregiously apparent during the infamous Hojo's Lab segment late in the game - a repetitive slog-a-thon dungeon transparently intended to make the game a few hours longer.
And so, while Square promised a more fleshed-out experience "for the fans," in reality they delivered a flabby first act of their remake project and in turn seriously dented the game's replayability.
One can only hope that the second entry, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, might scale back the dull mandatory dungeons and general busy-work a little.
