5. Getting Back To Historic Warfare - Call Of Duty: WWII

At the time of its release, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was by far the most polarising entry into the hit FPS franchise, continuing the series' shift away from traditional boots-on-the-ground combat towards full-on sci-fi mayhem.

To many, Infinite Warfare scarcely looked or felt like a Call of Duty game at all, and though decently reviewed by critics, left fans largely unmoved, resulting in it falling far short of sales expectations.

Even though the next Call of Duty game is typically in development for several years before the previous one is released, Infinite Warfare's follow-up Call of Duty: WWII was nevertheless framed as something of a "return to form" for the series, ditching the high-tech nonsense for a simpler, more straight-forward story set during World War II.

Yet while WWII was again decently received by critics, the player response was decidedly less enthusiastic.

It was a competent yet completely forgettable FPS which brought precious little new to the table, and compared to the wackier multiplayer suites in prior games, ultimately felt a bit safe and, well, boring.

As a result, WWII is generally viewed as a minor, unremarkable entry into the franchise, and one few have much love for.
