3. The Biochip Upgrade - Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Missing Link DLC)

When a game offers you what appears to be a sweet upgrade for your bionic abilities, you're likely to jump at the chance the first time around.

As it turns out though, there are no upsides to this decision - only painful realisations. As is shown in both optional lore collectibles and in a later cutscene, this biochip upgrade isn't for your benefit whatsoever.

Instead, it's revealed that the upgrade is more of a killswitch, designed to sabotage and control augmented individuals who went against the Illuminati. And so, when you confront Zhao Yun Ru about of all this, she activates the killswitch, disabling all your upgrades as well as giving you strange hallucinations.

This would be bad enough, but she does so right before introducing you to your next boss fight, which is against a man who appears to have every conceivable augmentation imaginable - so, in short, you're in for a pretty rough time.
