10 Touching Video Game Moments You Probably Missed

8. Galuf's Death - Final Fantasy V

When people talk about what an emotionally engaging saga Final Fantasy is, they'll always talk about Yuna, or Aeris, always goddam Aeris! The series is packed with some of the most iconic moments in gaming history, and because of this it seems that less flashy scenes yet still have been banished from memory. Take wise old Galuf Doe of Final Fantasy V, the venerable warrior and short-term member of your party who takes on the giant dark knight Exdeath by himself. Galuf valiantly fights despite having '0' HP left, and watching his endearing, pixellated little figure swiping away with the same animation over and over again to no avail is heart-rending. Eventually, he falls in battle, and when he does it hits you in a way that you didn't think was possible with such pixels. Sure, this moment was always designed to be a powerful one, but it's almost gained potency over the years despite its relative obscurity in the FF canon. With us being used to realistic-looking death scenes, there's something refreshing about seeing Galuf say his goodbyes to his fellow party members, then watching his body flicker away into nothingness. One of the most powerful video game moments of the pre-polygon era. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-pAMCwleLA
