10 Touching Video Game Moments You Probably Missed
9. 'Lost In Service' Screen - Cannon Fodder
Cannon Fodder was pretty much the M.A.S.H. of video games. It satirised war in a way that no game before it had, with everything from the intro music ('War's Never Been So Much Fun) to the comical nature of the missions being a tongue-in-cheek dig at the futility of armed conflict. But punctuating all the game's amusing moments are the inter-mission scenes, which are a stark contrast to the irreverent gameplay. Accompanied by the sombre 'Narcissus' tune, you get a credits roll showing all the soldiers you lost during that mission. You can skip this moment with the press of a button, but that would deprive you of one of video game's more profound musings on death. There's no fun-and-games in this scene, as a pair of poppies flank the slowly-scrolling name of soldiers who you've probably had with you for countless missions. When Jools, Jop, or one of the other soldiers you control early in the game, inevitably perishes, you feel an immense sense of loss for the guys, even though during gameplay they look just like every other jarhead in the game.
