10 Trailers That Misled You About Awesome Video Games

The Alters is a sci-fi survival game created by 11 Bit Studio, the Polish team behind This War Of Mine and Frostpunk, that sees protagonist Jan get stranded on an inhospitable planet after surviving a crash landing. To escape this alien world, Jan must use a rare mineral to create alternate versions of himself to help gather resources, maintain their base, and stay ahead of the sun's deadly radiation.

The announcement trailer was unveiled during Summer Game Fest in 2022, giving players their first look at this game. It showed Jan waking up in the base and finding his alternates examining a dead version of himself before the camera zooms out to reveal the circular base in the desolate landscape.

While this teaser introduced players to the premise and setting, the decision to use an upbeat track from Polish synth pop group Kombi alluded to The Alters being a quirky sci-fi outing. 

However, this couldn't have been further from the truth. Except for an endearing musical number, The Alters digs into bleak existential questions about life, technology, and morality as players grapple with tough decisions in an increasingly desperate situation.

The Alters is a phenomenal, albeit depressing survival game.
