The first Dark Souls game is nothing short of a masterpiece. From its intricate level design, memorable boss encounters, and epic soundtrack, there are many reasons why it continues to be championed by players. Although the gameplay changes that were made for the sequel have been divisive amongst fans, Dark Souls 2 nevertheless embodies the same captivating atmosphere and satisfying combat found within the developer's other titles.

One of the least liked aspects of this game, however, are its trailers.

First unveiled during the 2012 Video Game Awards, the announcement trailer was a slick cinematic that showed a lone warrior traversing vast and desolate locations. While it's expected that CGI trailers won't be reflective of gameplay footage, the final game was nothing like what was shown. Not only did the featured areas not appear in the finished product, but the masked enemies bore little resemblance to their in-game counterparts.

The controversy only worsened with the gameplay trailer that was released in the following year. Although it was comprised of actual gameplay, the version that players got their hands on was a significant graphical downgrade from what was advertised.

This was a terrible first impression that Dark Souls 2 would struggle to overcome.
