10 Under-Appreciated Westerns To Watch While You Wait For Red Dead Redemption 2

9. Shanghai Noon

Westworld Cowboy Ed Harris
Buena Vista Pictures

Next year sees the final instalment of the Shanghai series of films in an announcement that surprised many as firstly and most importantly: it has been FOURTEEN YEARS since Shanghai Knights had graced cinemas and secondly, the last time Jackie Chan had decided to revisit one of his old franchises, it resulted in painful sequel Rush Hour 3.

Certainly a movie that nearly undid all the goodwill the first two had created. It should also be noted that although at his advanced age, he could still do things that I couldn’t do in my twenties, Jackie will be 63 years old come 2017 putting into question; how much does Jackie still have in the tank for a movie like this?

Let us remember the first film in the franchise then that combined Jackie’s tried and tested kung-fu comedy with a classic Western theme. Chan’s Chon Wang (get it?) must travel from China to Carson City to rescue the Princess Pei-Pei (Lucy Liu); encountering and later teaming with hapless outlaw Roy O’Bannon played by Owen Wilson.

Wilson proved he could buddy-up with anyone and provides the perfect foil for the familiar Jackie Chan shenanigans throughout while fighting his own battles between crooked marshals and his former gang. This may remain Jackie’s best ever Hollywood film and we can only hope Shanghai Dawn continues the fun adventures of the duo.
