10 Underplayed Races You Should Try In Dungeons And Dragons

9. Shifter

So, you want to be a human, but you also kind of want to be a beast race as well. Why not try a Shifter? Sometimes called the were-touched, Shifters are thought of as being the descendants of Humans and Lycanthropes.

They may appear as a normal humanoid most of the time. When needed though, they can shift their shape into a more bestial form, reflecting their Lycanthrope heritage. Shifters are often found living on the edge of society, struggling to find their place in the world.

As described above you can change into a beast form at will. However, the interesting part of the Shifter is what beast form you choose. This is Dungeons and Dragons after all, there are many more were-creatures than just your common werewolf. Your choices are Beasthide, often a bear or boar that helps to increase your survival; Longtooth, Lupine creatures that are aggressive and loyal; Swiftstride, if you want to be a feline and hunt creatures; Or the most open of all, Wildhunt, which increases your wisdom but does not state a creature type. Which I presume means you could even be a dinosaur if it was ok with your Dungeon Master.
