6. Batman: Arkham Asylum - Scarecrow
I just had to have this game - according to my brother. He tried convincing me for a year to get this game, and I wouldn't listen. Why would I like a Batman game? Sure, I like The Dark Knight, but so did everyone. I was hardly what one would call a Batman fan. There was no way I would like this game. Eventually he gave up trying to sell me on the game and just bought it for me. He spent the money so I had to try it now. I was pleasantly surprised, the opening had me hooked, I loved the look and feel, but I was still hesitant. Once I started to figure out the combat and combos, and realized levelling up wasn't useless I started to love it. However, a few moments have cemented this game as one of the most memorable in my mind. I was hot on the trail of the kidnapped James Gordon, standing in an elevator as the Joker was asking me what I was really afraid of. Batman suddenly came down with a cold (or so I figured) and started coughing. As I exited the elevator I saw a few thugs swatting at the air around them pleading with a Dr. Crane to stop. A certain thug makes for a great jump scare as you approach the room and a creepy voice claims "there is no Crane, only Scarecrow." From there you frantically try to find your way to the maniac torturing these thugs only to find Gordon being dragged off by some off-screen enemy. From there this incredible music starts, Batmans eyes start glowing red, and you can't quite figure out why the camera is suddenly a little tilted. As you make your way through the vent, you are met by the unpleasant sight of a dead Commissioner Gordon. You call up Oracle to tell her you are sorry for her loss, but you are sent to voice mail. Confused you continue walking as the walls corrode and cockroaches climb out of every vent and crack. You get an uneasy feeling when you realise your trail ends at the morgue. Erie voices tell you to get out and you are sure to listen, unfortunately you exit the morgue...only to end up in the morgue. This time three body bags are on the tables squirming around. Of course the first two are Bruce Wayne's parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. (Cause what is Batman without an origin story?) But then there is a third one, you approach it with caution, unzip it slowly, and are met with your first heart pounding confrontation with the Scarecrow. From there you battle in a world of fear and are completely awe-struck by the developers use of Scarecrow, who is now my favourite Batman villain. Of course you meet your fears twice more, another encounter that leads you back down Crime Alley, and the last encounter that had me out of my chair ready to restart my PS3, (clever, Rocksteady.) But the first encounter sticks out the most, mostly because it was completely unexpected and unforgettable.
