6. Raiden Bobbing - Mortal Kombat 4
The power of even the most grandiose, cosmically reverent of cutscenes can be accidentally undone by visual silliness, as Mortal Kombat 4 shows.
Doubtless, the ascension of Raiden to the “pantheon of Elders” as reward for his consistent protection of mankind was meant to be suitably majestic. What a crying (or laughing) shame, then, that Raiden is rendered essentially swimming into the cartoon clouds above.
The inherent seriousness of the scene with Raiden being praised for his might and valour is completely ruined by the sight of the God of Thunder bobbing up and down as though treading water against the crudely drawn heavens.
The all-powerful figure before him doesn’t appear distracted in the least by Raiden’s awkward movements, as he regally declares the marvellous future that awaits the Lightning Lord. With his arms flapping and paddling preposterously, however, Raiden must be dearly hoping that the status of Elder God will enable him to learn a slightly less ridiculous form of flying, or at least static hovering.
