10 Unique Open-World Games With Awesome Mechanics

1. Nier: Automata

You don't get much more original than Nier: Automata.

The open world actioner from the mind of creative genius/total insane person Yoko Taro took everyone by surprise when it released in 2017, and for good reason.

This is a game that takes all the regular sandbox conventions and flips them on their head. For one, you need to complete it three times to see the true story, as each new run introduces a new playable character, each with their unique gameplay style.

From melee combat as pristine as you'd expect from the developers of Bayonetta to 2D bullet hell shooter sequences, Automata throws every mechanic it wants at the player and expects them to keep up.

It always finds ways to subvert expectations, whether that's through a fishing mechanic that can kill you if you ingest an animal not intended for androids, or a final fight against the game's actual credits that can result in the sacrifice of all your saved data.

Yep, seriously, this game is not afraid to take 40 hours of playtime and flush it down the toilet.
