10 Unmissable Single Player Gaming Experiences
3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)
Having just been released from a long stint in jail, Tommy Vercetti is sent to Vice City by his old boss, Sonny Forelli. Unfortunately, during his first drug buy he is set up and left with no money or merchandise. With Sonny demanding his money back, and everyone else seemingly wanting him dead, Tommy realises his only chance is to take over Vice City himself.
Grand Theft Auto III may have been the first attempt to take the franchise into 3D, and it was a very good game in its own right, but Vice City simply offered more of everything. The focus here was primarily on making sure the player was entertained and the Miami inspired city, which is more vibrant and interesting than any other in the GTA series, allowed for a hugely diverse selection of exciting missions. As the game progresses your impact on the city, and your rise in status, can really be felt leading to a fantastic finale set within your mansion (think Scarface!).
The '80s radio stations, complete with satirical hosts and an array of timeless songs, only adds to the atmosphere. There are still few things in the history of gaming that can match the simple joy of soaking in Vice City's '80s setting with Toto's Africa playing in the background.
