4. Half-Life 2 (2004)
Set around twenty years after the events of the original Half-Life, our unassuming hero Gordon Freeman is awoken from stasis by the mysterious G-Man to discover that the world has been taken over by the alien Combine. Teaming up with a resistance group, Freeman sets out to find out the truth behind Earth’s conquerors and free humanity.
From the fantastic introductory scene, it was clear that Half-Life 2 was going to be something special. The graphics, gameplay and physics (including the superb gravity gun) were truly ground-breaking and many modern games could learn a thing or two about telling a gripping story without the need for endless cut-scenes. Unless you played Half-Life 2 upon release it's hard to grasp just how ahead of its time it was, and well over a decade later, no first person shooter has yet bettered it.
Maybe one day Valve will actually see fit to give us the sequel that so many people have been clamouring for...
