10 UNSETTLING Facts About Your Favourite Games
1. The Real Life Models (Half-Life 2)
Now, this final entry is a buy one, get one free. Aren't you so lucky? You see, Valve's groundbreaking Half-Life 2 has two prominent examples of macabre factoids, and weirdly, they both centre on character models.
The first of these models is called Corpse01.mdl. Now, this unique texture seems at first like nothing more than an asset used for dead bodies sprinkled across environments. However, budding fans made a startling discovery (documented by Kotaku) after finding out that it was taken from the graphic image of a real dead body, as found in a medical textbook. Yes, that gruesome corpse you've seen many times is an actual dead person.
So, that one's horrifying, how about something more melancholic?
When it came to picking models to base their characters on, Valve wanted to find the right faces. Many figures in the game were based on employees and people from around the area. However, the beloved Eli Vance is one of the most mysterious. As revealed in the book Half-Life 2: Raising The Bar, Eli's character model was based on a homeless man holding a sign looking for work. The tragic thing is that no one knows what became of him afterwards. Where is he now? Is he doing okay? Sure, his face is immortalised on screen, but no one knows who he really is.
