10 Upcoming 2023 Horror Video Games You NEED To Play
7. The Last Case Of Benedict Fox
Before video games were high enough quality to really be able to scare us, they at least used horror imagery to create great experiences. For example, nobody was afraid of the way Castlevania looked even if it was chock full of recognisable monsters.
Along the same lines then, The Last Case of Benedict Fox might not be the scariest game on this list but it certainly looks like it’s using a horror aesthetic in an awesome, atmospheric and at times disgusting way.
A melting pot of Tim Burton, Lovecraft cosmic horror and Metroidvania; The Last Case of Benedict Fox puts the player in the role of a detective investigating a murdered family who winds up facing down a legion of demons. Whilst the Castlevania franchise comes to mind immediately, the 2.5D graphics of Benedict Fox are more in line with modern genre classics like Hollow Knight and the Ori games.
Every updated look at the title has shown that developers Plot Twist have really nailed a gorgeous world and a set of interesting gameplay devices. Players will jump into the memories of the deceased to piece together clues and tattoo new abilities on themselves to take on tougher monsters.
Indie Metroidvania games come thick and fast these days but Benedict Fox looks to be a game with a very clear identity and a very memorable look.
