With a top-down camera so distant that the main character looks about the size of an ant on-screen, the perspective in Below is pretty much the complete opposite of Dark Souls' close-up and immediate action.
But look a little closer, and the similarities become apparent, as you explore a dark and mysterious island of dungeons and caves, trying to survive as long as you can against the world's hostile denizens.
With permadeath and a tough-but-fair combat system, Below looks set to capture that raw, edge-of-seat intensity of Souls combat, as well as its moody and moribund setting.
Also, Below is dark. Really dark. To the extent that all the footage I've seen shows the hero going around with a torch. Incidentally, both Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 tried incorporating the torch as a crucial tool, but the hardware limitations of consoles at the time meant they couldn't get the desired lighting effects and scrapped the idea - so Below is kind of doing the things that Dark Souls only dreamed of!
