10 Upcoming Video Game Movies That Are Destined To Fail
Tetris. Tetris?! TETRIS!?!
You would have thought Hollywood would have learnt something after all the tremendous video game movie flops. But no. Having seen how well Super Mario Bros, Angry Birds, and Rampage have done, they still think it is a good idea to churn out an endless trail of video game adaptations.
IMDB is full of upcoming and announced movies, and judging from the pool of franchises that Hollywood is drawing from, they are incredibly eager to continue the decade-long trend of abysmal video game movies.
Of course, a video game movie could work, but it has the be the perfect franchise. Things like The Witcher and Metal Gear have such promise and mark a few upcoming releases that have genuine hope. However, there are so many video game movies on the docket that aren't even going to pass the first hurdle.
You need a good foundation to build an adaptation; a franchise with characters and stories that will translate well. They need to be versatile and able to hold their own in a medium that relies solely on storytelling and passive elements i.e. not the act of controlling the events on screen to propel the action.
Honestly, with that being the criteria, there are some shocking examples being green lit..
10. Fruit Ninja
A Fruit Ninja movie wouldn't even have worked when Fruit Ninja was relatable. All the people who played Fruit Ninja have moved on with their lives, with the game not even registering as a passing thought. So, how producers think they'll be able to market it to anyone is a mystery.
The idea is held back by the attachment to the game. A ninja that slices fruit could work as a child's cartoon or something, but the fact that it is born of a forgotten mobile game is just laughable. There are very few ways that a movie could work and none of them have any mass appeal.
It would be like making a Pong movie. Pong is a relic of gaming. No one is asking for a Pong movie, just as no one is asking for a Fruit Ninja movie. You can hardly expect to pull something revolutionary out of a mobile game that simply had you swiping back and forth.
