Similar to the sports sims, the yearly shooters will likely cross generations for the same reason; both appeal to a casual player base but have a big following of the hardcore too. However, there are a few reasons why a shooter might be pushed to the front of the promos ahead of sports games.

You can only make Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson look so good. The FIFA games are approaching photo realism, at least during the replays and pre match movies, but is that really a selling point? Having Matt Ritchie in your living room is hardly going to pop open wallets.

A hoard of screaming soldiers in your living room doesn’t sound great either, but there are some upsides.

Call Of Duty often gets tarred as being repetitive year on year, but it actually tackles different conflicts, includes different game modes and even has different teams of developers. It can sell the idea of a next gen experience far easier than FIFA.

They’ll still want the casual player base who’ll stick with this generation for a while, but they’ll also be likely front and centre of the commercials, guns blazing and boasting of the improved graphics and more immersive experience.
