10 Video Game Bad Endings BETTER Better Than Good Ones
2. Escaping With Otacon - Metal Gear Solid
Usually, when the game kills off your character's romantic interest, it does so in a really dramatic and gut-wrenching fashion. It's supposed to be the lowest moment in the character's life that makes you realize you've probably led them down the wrong path.
Well, except when you're playing Metal Gear Solid. Here, the death of your sweetheart is just another excuse to hang out with your favorite buddy.
The original Metal Gear Solid game features two distinct endings. One in which you escape the compound in the final mission with Meryl, Snake's potential love interest, and one in which you let Meryl die and you end up leaving with everyone's favorite geek, Otacon.
Since the latter ending is a direct result of Meryl's death, it's technically considered a bad ending. However, in reality, escaping with Otacon is just as good, if not better, than it is with Meryl.
Sure, Snake is initially distraught by his partner's death, but Otacon is quick to cheer him up, and afterward, the two of them share a heartfelt moment talking about each other's aspirations and making awkward movie references.
It's a gloriously campy ending that's so good, you'll completely forget you had to let Meryl die to get it.
