10 Video Game Characters Who Were Secretly The Villain All Along

2. Wheatley - Portal 2

Devil May Cry 3 Jester
Valve

The ever-trying Wheatley is one of the most endearing characters in all of the Portal franchise, even when he takes over testing and tries to kill you. Admittedly, this is because his competition is a miserable robot who spends half the game in a potato, and a woman we play as but never hear speak, but it still counts.

Because you have to sympathise with the poor robot, who was made as an 'Intelligence Dampening Core', which is repeatedly suggested to mean he was created to just be as dumb as possible.

But, as one incredibly thought-provoking fan theory speculates, this may not be the case. After all, Wheatley's job wasn't to be an idiot - it was to make other people be idiots, and to make decisions they otherwise wouldn't.

Which raises a much darker theory when you remember he was attached to GLaDOS to try and dampen her intelligence. Because, when you think about it, GLaDOS' decision to flood the Aperture Science building on Bring Your Daughter to Work Day doesn't add up The icy robot hates people, sure, but she loves testing - and killing all her potential test subjects just doesn't make any sense.

You could almost say... it's a stupid idea. Who could have convinced her to make a decision like that? Who knows.
